Double Genitive

· Grammar

This often causes confusion as to the proper use. English-as much as I love it - is an isolating language (from that angle like Chinese)
so we must be careful where we put the elements into the sentence. Certain
roles or all roles are assigned by the position unlike in Hungarian, where we
have a lot more flexibility. “The dog bit Peter.” or “Peter bit the dog.” That said,
with double genitives we have the same issue. Neither “*a Peter’s friend” nor “*Peter’s
a friend” seems to be well-formed.

“No students of mine”

“Every book of Jim’s”

“A friend of Peter’s”

To take it a bit further, never forget that it is doublegenitive, so:

“*A friend of Peter” - isn’t working.

Also, keep it indefinite.

“That mother of yours.” – does not sound good, does it. 😊
